Those basalt columns at the Giant's Causeway, the sheer cliffs at Fair Head, the ruins of Dunluce Castle hanging over the Atlantic. It's a landscape that doesn't do anything quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI make the long drive north from Cork several times a year, usually chasing a forecast that promises interesting light along those headlands. The geology alone is worth the trip. Whiterocks Beach in winter storm light is as dramatic as anywhere I've photographed, and the Dark Hedges at dawn, without another soul around, is something genuinely special!\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis collection covers the north coast from Fair Head to Dunluce, from the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge to the Causeway itself. Wild basalt, white limestone, and Atlantic weather doing what it does best. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe Skerries are barely islands. A handful of rocks off the North Antrim coast near Portrush, sitting so low on the horizon they almost dissolve into the sea. On this particular day, I wasn't even thinking about them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA rainstorm was dragging a heavy curtain of rain across the water to the left while the cloud broke just enough on the right to let a band of light through. That light hit the surface and turned it bright, almost metallic, cutting a horizontal streak right across the frame. The Skerries themselves are reduced to dark silhouettes. Barely there. And that's exactly what I wanted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis image was never about the rocks. It's about tonality. The way the tones shift from near-black in the storm clouds down through every shade of grey to that bright strip of reflected light on the water. The whole thing reads like a study in tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a quiet photograph. No crashing waves, no dramatic headland. Just weather and water and a few dark rocks that have been sitting there for thousands of years, indifferent to all of it. It doesn't announce itself the way some images do. You have to spend a moment with it. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe day had been a write-off. Heavy cloud sat low over the Antrim coast for hours, the kind of flat grey that kills any reason to stay. But I did stay, and the sun found a gap just before it dropped. A narrow band of clear air between the cloud base and the sea, and suddenly everything changed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThat warm orange glow bled across the water while the sky above stayed dark and brooding. The basalt in the foreground was wet from the incoming tide, picking up both temperatures at once. Cool greys on top, warmth underneath. Bengore Head sat out on the horizon with that distinctive flat profile, catching the last of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI had the tripod low among the rocks. The sea was rolling in with enough energy to give the foreground real movement, that turbulent wash dragging across dark stone. A few birds perched on a rock in the middle distance, completely unbothered.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt lasted maybe five minutes. Then the gap closed and the whole coast went grey again. What I love about this photograph is the restraint of it. The sun barely made it through, just enough to leave its mark. The geology up here is so dark and angular that when warm light does arrive, it has this extraordinary surface to work against. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eI never went back for the sunrise. That's the punchline. I'd gone down to the boulder beach east of Dunluce purely to scout a composition, work out where I'd plant the tripod the following morning. A test shot. Nothing more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut the north Antrim coast in summer catches light all day long. The sun rises in the northeast and sets in the northwest, and this eastern face of the castle was lit beautifully even close to midday. Strong directional sun from the left, mixed cloud breaking it up. I don't usually photograph landscapes at that hour. The light is too high, too flat. Except it wasn't flat at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThose dark basalt boulders in the foreground sat in deep shadow while the castle and sky behind were blazing bright. The contrast was enormous. I put a graduated neutral density filter on to balance it, which forced a slower shutter speed than you'd expect in the middle of the day. And that's what made it. The waves washing between the rocks went slightly soft, slightly silky, while the ruined walls stayed sharp and solid up on that headland. From sea level they look properly imposing, rising straight out of the rock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI stood there looking at the back of the camera and thought, well, that's not a test shot anymore. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eI had a plan for this photograph. Two large boulders sitting among seaweed and tidal pools at Colliery Bay, lit by warm golden sunrise light. That was the picture I'd come to make. The sky had other ideas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHeavy cloud was pushing in from the west, and it was obvious the golden light I wanted across the rocks wasn't going to materialise. But there was a narrow band of clear sky sitting right on the eastern horizon, exactly where the sun was due to come up over the Scottish Hebrides. So I abandoned the plan, repositioned, and pointed the camera straight at the sunrise instead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun broke through that gap and lit the underside of the clouds in deep reds and oranges. Maybe ten minutes, no more. The light wasn't strong enough to reach the foreground, so the rocks and pools stayed in cool blue tones while the sky above burned. That contrast of warm and cool is what makes this image for me. Fair Head sits across the water on the right, that great flat-topped headland you hear called out in every shipping forecast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's not what I went there to photograph. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eForty thousand basalt columns, give or take, packed tight and dropping into the North Atlantic. I made this photograph during blue hour, when the last warmth had drained from the sky and the light had gone cold and even. The sea was unusually calm, pooling in the gaps between the columns like dark glass. That prominent stack of columnar basalt rising to the right is what anchors the whole composition for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe geometry here is extraordinary. Each hexagonal column sits at a slightly different height, and from above, the effect is almost like a vast, irregular mosaic. It's a place that rewards patience and flat, quiet light. Pan's Rock sits at the end of a footbridge off Ballycastle Beach, and every shift of weight sends a vibration through the whole structure. During a two-minute exposure, that's fatal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph on my second trip to the Antrim coast in 2009. The morning was grey and flat, the kind of overcast light that makes you question why you bothered getting up. Nothing about the scene was particularly exciting. But I thought a long exposure might rescue it. Still the water completely, let the clouds streak, and see what emerged.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSo I set the tripod with one leg on the boardwalk and the other two balanced on the metal railings, extending it well above my head. I could barely see the composition on the screen. Then I had to stand completely motionless for the full exposure. Two minutes of not moving, not breathing heavily, not shifting my weight. The bridge had to be perfectly still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI needed that height to separate the foreground rock from Rathlin Island on the horizon. At eye level the two merged and the composition fell apart. Those extra feet of elevation gave the image its depth. The water went glassy, the clouds pulled into soft streaks, and the walkway became this strong geometric line cutting through all that stillness. Their pale, gnarled trunks lean inward at angles that seem almost deliberate, the branches locking together overhead to form a canopy that blocks most of the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this on a flat, overcast day, which is exactly what you want here. Soft, diffused light lets the texture of the bark come through without harsh shadows breaking up the forms. The road surface is dark with moisture, drawing your eye straight to the vanishing point where the trunks converge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a remarkable place. The trees are ageing and thinning now, and several have been lost to storms in recent years. A thin film of water left behind as the tide pulled back, turning the beach into a mirror. Pinks and oranges from the sky layered directly into the wet sand. The kind of light that arrives quietly and doesn't last long. Maybe fifteen minutes where everything aligned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I remember most is how still everything felt. The waves were barely there, just enough movement to leave a gentle wash across the sand. The North Channel doesn't often cooperate like this!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a photograph that works through restraint. No drama, no heavy skies. Just colour and reflection and one dark rock on an empty beach.
