{"title":"Donegal","description":"\u003cp\u003eDonegal is about as far from Kerry as you can get without leaving the country, and every kilometre of that drive north feels like a crossing into somewhere wilder. The coastline up there is relentless. Huge Atlantic cliffs at Slieve League dropping nearly 600 metres into the sea, empty beaches at Maghera where you might not see another person all day, and Malin Head pushing out into the ocean at Ireland's northernmost point.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI keep coming back for the light. Winter storms clearing over Fanad Head lighthouse, or a midsummer sunset that refuses to end. It's a place where the sky does remarkable things, often when you least expect it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThese photographs are drawn from trips over many years, each one involving a long haul from Cork. The river winds out through the bay near Portnoo before meeting the Atlantic, weaving through sandbars that rearrange themselves with every tide. Never the same place twice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this on a calm day with the water coming in fast. That crescent of sand at the top of the frame was the last piece still exposed. Twenty minutes later it was gone, just another shape beneath the surface. The timing was tight, maybe a thirty-minute window where enough sand remained to give contrast between the dry arc and the submerged patterns curving away beneath it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinated me was the geometry. One sweeping crescent, and below it the submerged sand echoing the same shape like concentric rings spreading outward. The turquoise water here is remarkable. Shallow Atlantic over white sand in flat light produces teal and aquamarine tones that barely look like Ireland at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrom directly above, you lose all sense of scale. It could be a brushstroke or a satellite image of some distant coastline. Strip away the horizon and familiar landmarks and you're left with pure shape, texture and colour. That's what I find so compelling about these tidal landscapes in Donegal. The tide was already reclaiming the Gweebarra estuary, flowing across the submerged banks in sheets of turquoise, and only this one pale sliver was still holding above the waterline. Small waves breaking gently across its surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLooking straight down changes everything. No horizon, no sky, no sense of scale. The deeper channels between the sandbanks read as dark teal curves, the shallow water over sand glows turquoise, and that final exposed crescent anchors the whole composition. From ground level this is a fairly typical Donegal estuary. From directly above, it becomes something closer to abstract painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eConditions had to be calm for this to work. Any chop on the surface and you lose the colour separation between deep and shallow water. The light was soft and even, which let the natural palette do all the work. No fighting with hard shadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAn hour later, every sandbank was gone. Six hours after that, they'd be back. Donegal","description":"\u003cp\u003eWe came around the western side of Aranmore and I wasn't ready for it. The helicopter banked and the whole headland opened up below us, this long spur of shattered rock pushing out into open Atlantic. I shouted something to the pilot. Probably not very articulate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe lighthouse sits right at the edge, a few white buildings clustered on the clifftop. From the air they looked almost irrelevant. The rock beneath them is so broken up, so layered and fractured, that the human structures barely register. You notice the geology first. The buildings are an afterthought.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBig swells were rolling in and detonating against the base of the cliffs. White water everywhere. Doors off the helicopter, wind coming in sideways, hands going numb around the camera. You'd think I'd be used to it by now. I'm not! But when you look down and see a headland like that, the cold stops mattering for a while.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe light was soft and overcast with a bit of warmth breaking through, just enough to pick out the texture in the rock and the white of the buildings against all that dark fractured stone. Thousands of years of Atlantic weather carved that headland into what it is now, and then someone decided to build a lighthouse on the end of it. Fair play to them. The cliffs here are remarkable, dropping sheer into the Atlantic with a natural arch carved deep into the rock face at sea level. A solitary stack stands detached from the mainland, holding its ground against the open ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in late golden hour light, the sun low enough to warm the cliff faces and pick out the reddish heather across the clifftops. The sea was unusually calm, which let me work the composition from high on the cliff without spray obscuring the detail below. That arch is the thing that draws the eye, a window right through the base of the cliff where the water pushes through.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTory Island is not an easy place to get to, and Dún Bhaloir sits at the far end of an already remote island. Donegal","description":"\u003cp\u003eIreland's most northerly island. I visited Inishtrahull once, in 2013, aboard the Irish Lights helicopter. We were working our way along the coast after a brutal winter of storms, surveying lighthouse stations for damage, and this was our last stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe island was abandoned in 1929, when the last families were taken off. Nearly a century later, the lighthouse and its buildings still stand, white and sharp against dark Atlantic rock. What surprised me when we landed was how slim the tower is compared to most Irish lighthouses. It's elegant in a way you don't expect from something so purely functional. The Commissioners of Irish Lights still maintain that white paint, and against the grey-green grass and black rock, it almost glows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI took this from the helicopter as we came in. The swell was running hard, breaking white around the island's edges, and the light was that diffused blue-grey you get under heavy cloud with just enough of a break to give the scene depth. From above, you see everything at once. The isolation, the exposed rock, the small cluster of buildings that once housed keepers and their families through Donegal winters. Hard to imagine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've been fortunate to visit quite a few of Ireland's offshore lighthouses, but this one stays with me. That slim white tower, still doing its job out beyond Malin Head. Hauling gear up the eastern end of Tory Island, sweating through my jacket, the ground fighting me the whole way. But then I reached the edge and looked down, and every complaint I'd been muttering to myself just stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBalor's Fort. Named after the one-eyed Fomorian god who supposedly imprisoned his daughter in a tower on this headland to thwart a prophecy. It didn't work. Prophecies never cooperate. But you can see why someone thought this place was fit for a god. The stone drops away almost vertically, banded in greys and ochres, and the Atlantic hits the base with a force you feel in your chest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat caught me was the arch. From directly above, the gap between the main headland and the detached sea stack reveals this remarkable natural arch, pale rock framing cold, clear turquoise water that had no business being that vivid in Donegal. The evening light was low enough to reach right into the gap and pick out every colour. From sea level, you'd never know any of this existed. Pale gold bleeding into deep turquoise, these long curved ridges shaped by tidal flow, shifting every few hours into something entirely different. I held position and just watched.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrom altitude, the whole structure of this coastline reveals itself. That long sandy spit holding the Atlantic back from the calm lagoon behind it. Rocky islands trailing northwest towards Tory, which sat on the horizon about twelve kilometres out, just a dark shape in the haze. Green fields running right to the cliff edge, as they do along so much of Donegal. It's a place that hides its real character at ground level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky was overcast with a faint warmth creeping in from the right, probably the last trace of a sunset that never quite committed. Perfect conditions, actually. No harsh shadows, and that flat diffused light let the colour in the shallows come through cleanly. Direct sunlight would have scattered off the surface and hidden everything underneath. The lagoon was dead calm too, which helped enormously. Even a light chop and those sand patterns vanish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTory Island in the distance gives the whole image its sense of scale and exposure. Without it, you're looking at a beautiful beach. Wildflowers scattered through the foreground grass, and the sky was mostly blue with some cloud building along the horizon. But that small ruined structure sitting out on its rocky outcrop gives you the scale of the place. Suddenly you understand that these cliffs rise nearly 600 metres from the water. Almost three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher, and I had them entirely to myself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've been back to Bunglass many times over the years, and this evening was the one I'd been waiting for. The sun dropped toward the Atlantic and the sky split cleanly in two. Deep orange and amber saturating the stone and grass to the west, cooler blue-grey cloud holding firm to the east. That division across the frame is what gives the image its tension.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sea was flat calm, which at Slieve League is rare. Normally you're up there bracing yourself, holding your tripod with both hands. This evening, nothing. Just the fading colours and the quiet. Everything rich and warm in those last fifteen minutes before the light goes. The deep greens of the cliff-top grass already darkening, the reds bleeding across the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDonegal doesn't get the attention that Kerry or the west coast receives from photographers, and honestly that suits me fine. I've stood beside these towers in half a dozen counties now, and every time I get the feeling that a single tower has been quietly following me from headland to headland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph about thirty minutes before sunset. The sun was low enough to rake across the west-facing cliff faces, picking out every fold and fracture in the quartzite. From above, the scale becomes clear. That thin neck of rock connecting the stack to the mainland. The Atlantic on three sides. The tower looks both purposeful and absurd up there. Whoever built it chose a position with complete command of the sea approaches, but getting materials to that point must have been miserable work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sea was calm that evening. Not a breath of wind, which is rare enough at Bunglas that it felt like a gift. I think about the soldiers who manned these towers. Posted to a rock in Donegal, watching for a French fleet that mostly never came. But I've learned that bad forecasts and good light are not mutually exclusive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eForty minutes before sunrise, the cloud was sitting low and thick over everything. The Atlantic was rough, big swells pushing spray up over the rocks below the headland. The lighthouse and keeper's buildings were just shapes in the grey. I set up on the stone pathway along the cliff edge and waited.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen a narrow gap opened on the western horizon, right at the waterline. This band of warm golden light broke through underneath the storm clouds and lit the whole scene. Fifteen minutes, maybe less. The white walls caught the warmth, the red lantern room glowing against that dark, heavy sky. The Inishowen peninsula sat across the water, solid and dark against the brightening horizon. The roads narrow fast once you leave the lighthouse, and I spent a good while driving in circles, second-guessing every turning, watching the sunrise light slip away through the windscreen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut I made it. The sun was still low enough to flood the arch with warm directional light, all russet and deep orange sandstone against the cool green of the clifftop fields above. That contrast is what makes this particular stretch of Donegal so rewarding. The arch itself is enormous. The Atlantic pushes right through the opening, and you can hear it echoing off the rock even from above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI worked the composition to place that great stone frame in the foreground with the sandy cove sitting behind it, patchwork fields running back towards Ballyhoorisky and the calm inlet beyond. Everything laid out, lit from the east. Two locations from one sunrise, and both worked out. This was made well after sunset, probably around half ten on a summer evening, with the beam already sweeping through low cloud. The keeper's cottage still had its lights on, which gave the whole headland a sense of life against an otherwise empty sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI'd been waiting for the water to settle. The wind had dropped just enough to let a long exposure flatten the surface of the inlet, and the rocks in the foreground held their detail nicely against it. Across Lough Swilly, the Urris Hills had gone to silhouette. Sometimes you wait hours for a scene to simplify like that, and sometimes it just happens!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me to this composition was the lighthouse doing what lighthouses do. Throwing light into darkness. And then the lighthouse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me in was the enclosure wall. Painted white, it follows the natural contour of the headland so faithfully it looks like it grew out of the rock. On this particular evening, with the sun dropping low behind the peninsula, that wall was glowing against the dark shoreline and green grass. The whole complex felt like it belonged to the land rather than having been placed on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDonegal can be ferocious, and this point takes a proper battering through winter. But the sea was remarkably calm. Flat grey water, high cirrus clouds, golden light. From the air, you get the full measure of how exposed this place really is. The road out narrows and narrows, and people have tended that light for generations, walking to the very edge. There's a commitment in that which I find fascinating.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI had a narrow window for this photograph. A few minutes either side and the white walls would have been lost in brightness or swallowed by shadow. But I wanted the view nobody gets from the ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI worked my way around to the west and spent far too long chasing one specific alignment: the setting sun shining directly through the lantern room glass. Get it wrong by a few degrees and you lose everything. Get it right and the whole lantern glows gold, as if someone had just lit the lamp for the evening. I was running low on time and patience, adjusting by tiny increments. Obsessed, frankly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me to this angle is the diagonal line of the headland itself, the way it recedes from the lighthouse along the boundary wall of the keeper's buildings. The complex sits at the very tip, this small cluster of white walls holding their ground where the rock drops into broken water on both sides. You can see the exposure in it. The vulnerability.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe cloud had broken just enough along the western horizon to let that remarkable late Donegal light through. So far north, the sun barely drops. It just hangs there, low and golden, for what feels like an age. Have you ever noticed how the last twenty minutes before sunset in the northwest seem to stretch? I'm endlessly fascinated by it. Malin Head, the most northerly point of Ireland, and the first photograph I made for a project to document the entire Wild Atlantic Way coastline from the air. I live in West Cork, so the logic was straightforward. Begin at the furthest point from home, and every trip after that gets a little shorter. That was the plan, at least.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI drove up to Donegal not entirely sure what I'd find from above. I'd stood on this ground before, but never seen it like this. The sun was sinking into a band of haze, throwing that soft diffused warmth across everything. No harsh shadows, just gold. Banba's Crown sits right at the tip of the headland, that old stone tower perched on the highest point with the Atlantic open in every direction beneath it. The layered rock shelves below look almost like a geological cross-section from this height, dark stone with white water breaking across them. And that grass, impossibly green against the warm sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've made hundreds of photographs for that project since, but this one holds a particular place for me. Not the most dramatic image in the collection, but the first. I've driven Glengesh probably a dozen times over the years, connecting Ardara and Glencolmcille through open moorland, and I still can't get through it without pulling over. The sky won't let you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular afternoon, big cumulus were running fast on a westerly, each one throwing its shadow across the valley floor. Constantly moving, constantly reshaping the light. I'd frame a composition and watch the tonal balance change completely before I could fire the shutter. Three consecutive frames where a shadow landed squarely across the one section I needed lit. The wind was absolutely working against me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was the only option. Stripping the colour out lets you see what the light is actually doing. Bright grass against deep shadow, texture in the cloud faces, that tonal gradient running down towards Glencolmcille. The hills here aren't sharp or jagged. They're round and worn. But the space between them is enormous, and the road below is barely a thread.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe pass doesn't get the attention that Slieve League or Horn Head receive, which is probably part of why I keep going back. I'd been watching the forecast for days, waiting for the one thing that matters most at Dunlewy Lough: no wind. You can have the most remarkable sky in the world, but if there's a ripple on that water, you lose half the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the eastern shore well before dawn, fingers already numb. Errigal was just a dark shape against nothing. Then the colour arrived. Faint at first, a warmth catching the high cloud streaming overhead. Within ten minutes the sky had gone from grey to deep purple to an extraordinary pink, and the lough held every bit of it. A perfect mirror.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes this image for me is the texture in those clouds. Not uniform. The colour graduates from bright pink nearest the light source through to deep purple further away, and every inlet and small peninsula along the shore carries its own reflection of that shift. Errigal's quartzite cone sits right at the centre, snow patches on the upper slopes glowing in the warmth of it all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a mountain I keep coming back to. That sharp pale cone rising out of dark bogland. You cross a couple of fields from the road until the ground drops away and the Atlantic appears below in a wide crescent of water so green it looks tropical. A funny thing to say about the northwest coast of Ireland when you're being sandblasted sideways, but there it is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI was rushing between positions on the hillside trying to find the right angle before a bank of cloud closed in from the west. Maybe twenty minutes of clear light left. Not ideal when you're on a steep slope with expensive gear. At one point I sat down hard on wet grass and slid about a metre before catching myself. Dignified it was not!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut the light held. That low evening sun raked hard across the hillsides, pulling out every fold and texture in the terrain, turning the whole scene sculptural. The colour in the water was extraordinary. Boyeeghter is not easy to reach and not easy to pronounce, but it's a place I think about often. The name suggests violence. I'd been shooting around Ardara all morning, heading for Glencolumbkille, when the clouds broke apart halfway up the pass and sent hard shafts of sunlight across the valley. Every fold in the hillside suddenly had its own shadow. I pulled in and didn't get back in the car for the better part of an hour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGlengesh Pass is a glacial valley, smooth rounded hills on both sides with grass right to the tops, funnelling down to a broad plain in the distance. On a flat overcast day it would be pleasant enough. But with cumulus moving fast from the west, the whole landscape was being reshaped every thirty seconds. Shadows crossing one slope, sliding off, hitting the moorland on the other side. You could actually see the contour lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI converted to black and white almost immediately. The colour was fine but it was competing with what actually interested me, which was the tonal range those cloud shadows were creating. Without the green, every highlight and dark fold on those hillsides became the photograph. The panoramic format was the only option.
