Howth Head, Bull Island, the South Wall out to Poolbeg. These places are in my bones.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI live in Cork now, but every time I go back I'm reminded how much wild landscape sits right at the edges of the city. Dawn light on Killiney Bay, frost on the Dublin Mountains, the red bulk of Poolbeg cutting through sea fog. This was a full moon, the sea barely moving, and that lunar reflection laying a bright path across the water straight towards the beacon. The lighthouse was active, its light competing with the moon for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI love the quiet geometry of this scene. The red and white stripes of the Muglins caught in moonlight, the rocks in the foreground giving the image weight and depth, and that residual blue in the sky before full darkness arrived. Dublin","description":"\u003cp\u003eI grew up fifteen minutes from Killiney Bay. Spent half my teenage years scrambling around on those rock platforms after school, never once thinking about photographing them. Funny how that works. It took moving to West Cork and coming back as a visitor to actually see the place properly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe rock shelf here runs a long way out at low tide, all these dark layered slabs worn flat by the sea. The white rock sits right in the middle of it, pale and conspicuous against everything around it. I set up a long exposure to slow the water down, let it go soft and featureless around the harder edges of the stone. Stripped the scene back to just shapes and texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBroken cumulus was clearing from the west, and that last hour of light was warm and orange along the horizon while the rock stayed in cool shadow. Dublin","description":"\u003cp\u003eEverything was packed away. That's the part I remember most clearly. I'd been shooting on the South Bull Wall at dawn, was done for the morning, gear back in the bag. Then I spotted him. A grey heron stalking through a tidal pool on the Sandymount Strand side, completely absorbed in his own breakfast hunt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMurphy's Law says the bird flies the instant you're ready. I hauled everything out again anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe tide was out, barely a breath of wind, and that shallow water had turned to glass. Low golden light across Dublin Bay. With a long lens I could isolate the heron completely against the flat surface. No rocks, no seaweed, no shoreline. Just the bird and its reflection, that slow deliberate posture with the neck stretched forward, every step calculated. He was remarkably co-operative. Stayed put long enough for me to pick my moment precisely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the earliest photographs in my collection, and a rare wildlife image for me. I'm not a wildlife photographer. But sometimes you just need to ignore the voice telling you to leave the camera in the bag! The simplicity of this one is what I find so satisfying.
