I can be driving the coast road between Ballyconneely and Roundstone, thinking about nothing in particular, and suddenly the light shifts over the bog and the Twelve Bens appear like something from another century. It never gets old.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI make the trip from Cork as often as I can, drawn back by that particular Connemara atmosphere, the one where low cloud drags across the mountains and the Atlantic throws itself at the granite. Clifden, the wild emptiness of the boglands, the limestone pavements of Inis Mór. Every visit gives me something different.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis collection brings together my favourite images from years of returning to these places. Dún Aonghasa has fascinated me since childhood, and that single design decision is the reason. A semicircular fort perched at the very limit of habitable land, using a sheer limestone drop as its final defence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI got the drone up on a rough evening when the cloud was thick and low but tearing apart to the west. Late sun pushed through in shafts of warm gold, catching the cliff tops and the hundreds of tiny stone-walled fields stretching across the plateau behind the fort. Below, the Atlantic was hammering the base of the rock. From above, you see the full layout clearly: the chevaux-de-frise field of jagged upright stones, the concentric walls, and then that abrupt edge where Inis Mór simply ends.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe light lasted maybe ten minutes before the cloud sealed over again. That warm colour against grey limestone and dark water is what makes this image work for me. Without it, still dramatic. The summit had a band of pink cloud wrapped around it, lit by the last of the evening sun. Everything else was fading to blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI'd been driving back from a day further north and pulled over when I saw the light hit those stacks. The bog was soft underfoot, which I discovered the hard way. But the foreground was too good to pass up. All that rough geometry of the peat sods against the flat moorland, then that unmistakable profile in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTurf cutting in the west of Ireland looks exactly as it did a hundred years ago. Galway","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe road into Leenaun from the south passes through some of the most dramatic moorland in Connemara, and on this particular afternoon the sky was doing most of the work. Heavy storm clouds were pushing in from the right while a stubborn patch of blue held out to the west, letting shafts of light slip through onto the hillsides below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what makes this stretch of Galway so rewarding to photograph. The light is never static. Here it picks out the middle-distance ridges in patches of olive and gold while the foreground bog stays muted and dark. Galway","description":"\u003cp\u003eMy sister and I were on Inis Mór for fieldwork, surveying boulder ridges along the exposed Atlantic coasts of all three Aran Islands. Proper research, not a photography trip. But I had the drone with me, and the Black Fort demanded it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe'd had heavy rain most of that afternoon. The limestone had gone dark and slick, everything saturated. Then the cloud broke apart from the west and a band of warm, low light caught the cliff faces. A rainbow appeared over the water to the north. I got the drone up fast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrom the air, the defensive logic of this place becomes immediately clear. The fort wall runs straight across a narrow peninsula, cliffs dropping sheer on three sides into dark Atlantic water. The chevaux-de-frise. The limestone terraces stepping down in layers. Green patches where soil has gathered in the cracks over centuries. On foot, you feel the exposure. From above, you read the geometry of it, the whole thing laid out like a diagram of ancient defensive thinking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDún Aonghasa gets the visitors and the attention. The Black Fort you have to walk to, and when you arrive it's just you and the wind and two thousand years of weather. I've always preferred it. I came across this ewe and lamb grazing at the roadside on the hill above the lake, completely indifferent to me and the camera. They made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast light is doing exactly what you'd want here. Soft and even across the whole valley, no blown highlights on the grass, just enough broken cloud to give the sky some character. Patches of blue opening up to the right add a bit of depth to what could otherwise be a flat grey ceiling. The road curves away downhill and draws you into the scene, past the scattered fields and farmhouses, down toward the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA quiet corner of Galway that most people drive straight through. The beach is a tombolo, a narrow spit of land with a beach curving on either side, and from ground level you sense that shape but never fully grasp it. From the air, the whole structure reveals itself. Pale sand arcing between two bays, rock darkening towards the headland, the Atlantic shifting from amber near shore to deep blue further out. It looks almost tropical until you remember the water temperature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this panoramic on a calm evening with the sun dropping low and the light gone that deep gold you can't plan for in Connemara. The Twelve Bens were visible in the background, scattered houses dotted the mainland shore, and the machair grassland gave way to rock and white sand against dark ocean. Conditions like this on the west coast are rare. The place can throw four seasons at you in an afternoon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut this evening was still, warm, and extraordinarily clear. That's where Slyne Head is, and getting there in 2014 meant persuading a fishing charter operator to take me and a large drone out into open Atlantic. He was so helpful he built a plywood landing deck on the stern of his boat before I even arrived.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sea had other ideas. The boat was pitching badly, and on one landing attempt I nearly lost the drone entirely. I brought it down towards the deck and a wave caught the boat at exactly the wrong moment, lurching it sideways. The drone came within inches of going straight overboard. My heart was somewhere around my ankles for a good few minutes after that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut the light. The sun was dropping low, throwing warm colour across the sky while the ocean stayed dark and restless, waves breaking white against black rock. From a few hundred feet up you see how exposed this place really is. Two small white buildings on a slab of stone with nothing between them and North America. The whole Atlantic pushing against them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI remember the plywood deck, the swell, that sickening lurch. Beyond them, the ground rises gradually towards the Maumturks before Mweelrea takes over the horizon. The headland pushes out into shallow emerald water, and that shape gives the whole image its backbone. A small lake sits within the peninsula itself, adding another layer of green to what's already a remarkable palette. Behind it all, Diamond Hill rises with that distinctive cone, the Twelve Bens stacked beyond, and Kylemore Glen stretching away to the left with the abbey clinging to the slopes of Doughraugh Mountain. A lot happening in one frame!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe cloud was heavy but broken that day. Patches of sunlight tracked slowly across the ridgelines, picking them out, then letting them fall back into shadow. No golden hour, no theatrics. And I think that's exactly why it works. The soft, overcast light let every colour breathe. Shallow turquoise near the shore shifting to deep blue where the seabed drops away, with no harsh shadows fighting those transitions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI'd walked this ground dozens of times at eye level without really seeing it. A sandy causeway connects it to the mainland and people drive across regularly, though get the timing wrong and your car is going for a swim. From the air, though, its real character opens up. The brown moorland scored with old field boundaries, the scattered white houses, the channels of deep green-blue Atlantic running between every spit of land. Behind it all, the Twelve Bens sitting along the horizon like a wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat held me was the layering. Foreground rock and surf, then the tidal channels, then Omey itself, then the mainland, then the mountains. Five distinct horizontal bands of colour and texture stacked one behind the other. It's a view that would be impossible from the ground and very difficult even from a drone at this scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've flown this coastline a number of times now with Irish Lights, and Connemara from above never fails to surprise me. Inisheeshan is really just a pair of low-lying rocks, dark and barnacled, sitting a few feet above the waterline. Barely qualifies as an island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe evening was dead calm, the sun dropping into a band of haze on the horizon, and the Atlantic had settled into long, gentle swells. As those swells met the rocks, they refracted and wrapped around them, laying down diagonal lines across the surface of the water. Simple geometry, endlessly shifting. Out beyond, the chain of smaller rocks trails off toward Slyne Head, where you can just make out the lighthouses in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eNo drama here. No crashing surf or towering cliffs. Just warm amber light, a calm sea, and rock worn smooth over thousands of years. Seen from above, those diagonal wave patterns read like contour lines on a map. Every ripple bending around the edges of the stone, each one catching that low sun differently. Too small for anyone to have lived on, too low to offer shelter. A small cluster of buildings on the left gives you a sense of how large these mountains actually are. Connemara does this remarkably well, reminding you how small you are in the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI waited a long time for that light to find the right spot. We were working our way down through Connemara, and Slyne Head was one of the scheduled stops. The pilot held position while engineers assessed structural damage, and I worked fast from an open door. You don't get to ask for a second pass very often!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat strikes me is how violent the sea looks here. Waves piling into those dark jagged rocks with real force, white water visible from hundreds of feet up. And yet by the standards of what this station endures during a proper winter storm, this was a relatively calm day. An ordinary Tuesday for the lighthouse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe twin towers sit on the only piece of ground with any vegetation. A small patch of green surrounded by a long chain of reef that barely breaks the surface in places. You can see immediately why this was such a critical navigational point. Ships approaching from the west would have had very little warning before they were on top of those rocks. The lighthouse has been saving lives here since 1836.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast light suited the mood. The mountains of Connemara are just visible through the haze, but the real subject is those small white buildings and the ocean that surrounds them.
