It's a remarkable thing to witness in person, the sheer violence of the sea against that small white tower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe light was flat and grey, heavy cloud pressing down, which actually works well here. It strips the scene back to raw contrast: white water, dark rock, the red of the lantern housing. Everything else falls away. The scale is what gets me every time I look at this image. The rock itself is massive, rising sheer from the Atlantic with a natural tunnel running clean through its base. In this photograph, the early morning sun fires straight through that tunnel, lighting it up like a furnace while the rest of the rock stands in heavy silhouette.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGannets wheel around the summit in their hundreds. The old lighthouse perches on top, long since automated, keeping watch over one of the most exposed headlands on the Irish coast. I love the simplicity of this image. The twin pinnacles disappear into low cloud here, which is how I see it more often than not. You don't get many calm days out at the Skelligs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat strikes me about this particular image is the raw force of the water against the base of the rock. White spray climbs halfway up the cliff face, and the sea around the island is a churning mess of foam and dark water. Gannets circle above in their thousands, though in these conditions they're barely visible against the grey.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the most remarkable seabird colonies in the North Atlantic. Around 30,000 gannet pairs nest on those vertical walls of rock every year. The scale of it is difficult to convey until you see the birds against the cliffs!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSmall Skellig's larger neighbour has quite a story too. Antrim","description":"\u003cp\u003eForty thousand basalt columns, give or take, packed tight and dropping into the North Atlantic. I made this photograph during blue hour, when the last warmth had drained from the sky and the light had gone cold and even. The sea was unusually calm, pooling in the gaps between the columns like dark glass. That prominent stack of columnar basalt rising to the right is what anchors the whole composition for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe geometry here is extraordinary. Each hexagonal column sits at a slightly different height, and from above, the effect is almost like a vast, irregular mosaic. It's a place that rewards patience and flat, quiet light. Kerry","description":"\u003cp\u003eThere's a logbook hidden under rocks at the very top of that higher peak on the right. If you can get up there, you write your name in it. A handful of people have managed it over the years. I'd love to be one of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've been fortunate enough to land on Inis Tiaracht once and attempted to climb to that summit. Without ropes, it became clear fairly quickly that wasn't going to happen. The old path the lighthouse keepers used has eroded so badly in places that sections which were once a rough walkway are now just exposed rock face. I turned back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the westernmost point of Ireland, and it looks it. Two jagged peaks rising straight out of the Atlantic, the lighthouse and its buildings clinging to the lower rock, waves hammering the base. I've photographed it from more or less this same perspective three times now, and each image is completely different. The sea state, the sky, the mood. This one, made on a blustery January day with the cloud sitting low and heavy, is my favourite. The diffused light flattens the colour but brings out every detail in the rock. You can see just how vertical and exposed the place really is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe island changes every single time. That's what keeps me coming back, and why I have more near-identical compositions of Tiaracht than anything else in my collection. That kind of light is actually ideal for a panoramic composition like this. Hard sunlight would have killed the reflection entirely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eRoss Castle dates from the fifteenth century and was one of the last strongholds to fall to Cromwellian forces in 1652. Soft, diffused light lets the texture of the bark come through without harsh shadows breaking up the forms. The road surface is dark with moisture, drawing your eye straight to the vanishing point where the trunks converge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a remarkable place. The trees are ageing and thinning now, and several have been lost to storms in recent years. A semicircular fort perched at the very limit of habitable land, using a sheer limestone drop as its final defence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI got the drone up on a rough evening when the cloud was thick and low but tearing apart to the west. Late sun pushed through in shafts of warm gold, catching the cliff tops and the hundreds of tiny stone-walled fields stretching across the plateau behind the fort. Below, the Atlantic was hammering the base of the rock. From above, you see the full layout clearly: the chevaux-de-frise field of jagged upright stones, the concentric walls, and then that abrupt edge where Inis Mór simply ends.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe light lasted maybe ten minutes before the cloud sealed over again. That warm colour against grey limestone and dark water is what makes this image work for me. Without it, still dramatic. They're permanently available, so you never quite get around to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular winter's morning, the low sun caught the east-facing wall of the tower and I had that familiar argument with myself. Stop now or it'll be another ten years. So I pulled the car in. The frost was heavy on the ground, that crisp white coating you only get on still, clear mornings. The light was raking across the stonework from the south-east, picking out every joint and fracture in what remains of the battlements. A 15th century tower house on the banks of the Sullane River, its name translates as The Castle of the Fairy Rock. Ghost hunters visit it regularly. Whatever spirits were present that morning, they were in generous form and let me have the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I really enjoy about this image is the wooden post-and-rail fence curving through the midground like the bow of a ship. Mayo","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe pool is what made this photograph. Not the sea stack, as remarkable as it is, but that rock pool carved into the platform at the base of the cliffs. About eight feet deep, filled and drained by every wave. I timed the exposure to catch the water spiralling back out, and after several attempts I got the vortex I was after.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGetting down there was the real challenge. You can only access the platform at low tide, and that's not a suggestion. The whole thing floods when the water comes back in. I wouldn't have gone without someone who knew the spot well and had a solid read on the local conditions. Most people see Dún Briste from the cliff tops, and that's a fine view. But from sea level, standing on wet rock with the stack towering fifty metres above you, the scale changes completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOvercast light. No harsh shadows on the wet stone, no blown highlights. Perfect for black and white, where all that texture in the sedimentary layers could come through. Those horizontal bands are geological time laid out in clear stripes, and beneath them the Atlantic is still carving away. The flat karst coastline runs off towards Eeragh lighthouse on the horizon. Quiet conditions, a few cumulus building, good visibility across to the other islands. Nobody has stood up there in centuries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDún Briste translates as \"the broken fort,\" and from the cliffs at Downpatrick Head the name makes immediate sense. This massive column of layered sedimentary rock rises fifty metres from the ocean, its top flat and green, as if someone lifted a small field and set it on a pillar of stone. It looks like it belongs to the land, but the sea has long since claimed it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this as a panoramic long exposure on a heavy, overcast day. No drama in the sky at all. But that flat, diffuse light was exactly what I wanted. It held the rock texture in even tone and let me concentrate on the water. A strong Atlantic swell was wrapping around the base of the stack, and the extended exposure turned those colliding currents into flowing lines and trails. Almost like a map of the ocean's movement around the rock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe cliffs here are completely exposed, and a windy day adds a certain focus to the proceedings! Somewhere between too short and too long, the water retains its energy while revealing its structure. That's what I came away with from an hour on the pass between Mount Eagle and Cruach Mhárthaín, hands frozen, hood slapping me in the face, one hand on the tripod to stop it going over the edge. But the sky that afternoon was extraordinary, and I wasn't leaving until it gave me something.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eInfrared changes everything up there. The Atlantic drops to near black, the cloud highlights push almost pure white, and suddenly the tonal range in the sky becomes the whole photograph. The Great Blasket holds the lower frame like ballast, its whale-back shape familiar and solid. An Tiaracht catches hard sidelight from the south, bright on one face, falling dark on the other. They anchor the composition, but the real work is happening overhead. Big cumulus banks rolling in from the southwest, breaking apart, reforming, each one lit from above with a bright crown and a dark underbelly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI've stood on that pass dozens of times and always pointed the camera down at the islands. This time I tilted fifteen degrees higher than usual, and the whole image changed. That's my favourite thing about infrared. Kerry","description":"\u003cp\u003eConor Pass is the highest mountain pass in Ireland, and on a clear day the view from the top takes in most of the Dingle Peninsula. This was not a clear day, not entirely. A band of warm golden light was moving across the valley from the west while heavy rain clouds sat low over the mountains to the north, refusing to budge. The two systems just hung there, side by side, for maybe twenty minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBelow the pass, the corrie lakes sit dark in their glacial hollows. Beyond them, the land falls away toward Brandon Bay and out to the Atlantic. From this height you can see how the peninsula thins as it pushes west, the fields giving way to rough ground and then nothing but ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes this image work is that raking sidelight. It picks out every ridge and fold in the moorland, all those greens and deep ambers that Kerry does so well. I stood on the riverbank in the Hag's Glen and watched those clouds stacking above the summit, building weight by the minute, and knew this had to be black and white.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eStripping the colour out of a Kerry valley is a gamble. You lose all that familiar green. But what you gain is volume. The sky becomes heavy and three-dimensional, the moorland grass goes silver, and those boulders in the stream bed turn into dark anchoring shapes that hold the whole composition together. The Hag's Tooth juts from the slope of Knockbrinnea to the right, giving the glen its edge. Dramatic geology, perfectly placed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI gave the exposure just enough length to soften the water without losing the texture of the rocks. That contrast matters. Hard mountain, heavy sky, and then this gentle movement through the foreground pulling everything forward. It's a photograph I keep returning to because the construction feels right. That long finger of rock reaching into the Atlantic, tapering to a pyramidal peak, the ocean pulling white around its base on every side.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat struck me was how committed this ridge is to the sea. The bulk of the island falls away behind it, and the headland just keeps going. Cliffs dropping hundreds of metres on both sides. Scattered sea stacks standing alone in the swell below, broken off and holding their ground. The water here is extraordinarily dark green, that deep Atlantic colour where the continental shelf drops away and there's real depth beneath you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe light was diffuse that day, filtered through patches of cloud, which suited the image perfectly. Hard sunlight would have buried the cliff faces in contrast. Instead, every ridge and fold in the rock reads clearly, and the breaking waves become the brightest thing in the frame, drawing your eye along the coastline. I've walked parts of that headland. The beach is narrow, properly hemmed in by cliffs on the right, and when the Atlantic swell is up there's nowhere to hide from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI set up low, right at the waterline, framing a moss-covered rock and letting a long exposure smooth the surf into streaks around it. Flat overcast light, no sun whatsoever, which suits a scene like this. It holds the detail in the water and the dark rock without anything burning out. Behind the breakers, the headlands stacked back into mist, each one fainter than the last. I had to move fast between sets. The bigger waves had a habit of arriving with very little warning!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCoumeenole at full force. Heavy cloud, rain on the way, the kind of morning where the bed makes a compelling argument. But I've learned that bad forecasts and good light are not mutually exclusive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eForty minutes before sunrise, the cloud was sitting low and thick over everything. The Atlantic was rough, big swells pushing spray up over the rocks below the headland. The lighthouse and keeper's buildings were just shapes in the grey. I set up on the stone pathway along the cliff edge and waited.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen a narrow gap opened on the western horizon, right at the waterline. This band of warm golden light broke through underneath the storm clouds and lit the whole scene. Fifteen minutes, maybe less. The white walls caught the warmth, the red lantern room glowing against that dark, heavy sky. The Inishowen peninsula sat across the water, solid and dark against the brightening horizon. The contrast was remarkable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTen minutes after I got this photograph, it was raining. Beyond that, the Kerry mainland stretches along the horizon under a band of residual twilight. Heavy cloud covered most of the sky, but a narrow gap opened high in the sky, letting through a band of warm light that caught the spray and the wet rock faces. That's what held me there. Mayo","description":"\u003cp\u003eI made this from a helicopter over Clew Bay after fresh snow had fallen on the upper slopes. Cold, clear, visibility stretching for miles. The kind of day you don't waste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrom directly above the coastal plain, Croagh Patrick looks volcanic. Almost too perfectly shaped to be real. The snow patches on the upper slopes caught the early afternoon light, and the shadow falling across the right flank gave the summit a sense of mass and weight you don't appreciate from ground level. You can see the pilgrim trail worn into the southern flank, that pale line scratched into the quartzite by thousands upon thousands of feet every year. Some of them barefoot, though that kind of craziness is less common than it used to be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eClare Island sits out beyond the bay. The patchwork of fields on the plain below looks impossibly green against grey and white quartzite. I've photographed this mountain from the ground many times, but this perspective changed how I think about it. From up here you can see how it dominates everything around it. The settlements, the roads, the fields, all arranged around a single dramatic point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI won't pretend there isn't something faintly absurd about photographing a place defined by physical hardship and devotion from the comfort of a helicopter. The pilgrims earned their view. Kerry","description":"\u003cp\u003eI made this in 2008, on a filthy afternoon right at the tip of the Dingle peninsula. The kind of day where the wind is directly in your face and you're questioning your life choices. It's one of the oldest images in my collection, and still one of my favourites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEveryone knows that zigzagging slip road dropping down the cliff to the harbour where the boats leave for the Blaskets. Dramatic from any angle. But I wanted the full sweep of that curve in a single composition, so I set up on the cliff edge and spent a while positioning everything carefully, making sure no foreground rock or grass interrupted the line as it wound downward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt was blowing a gale. The two great pyramidal sea stacks offshore were taking the full force of the Atlantic. I used a long exposure to turn all that violence into something quieter, the sea rendered as mist swirling around their base. And if you look carefully at the very top of those stacks, there are seagulls clinging on up there. They'd found the one spot where they could sit without being blown into next week.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe long exposure did something interesting with the foreground grass too. Where it was sheltered, in the lee of the slope, it's sharp. Where it was getting battered, it's gone soft with motion blur. You can actually read the wind in this image. For most of the year you can't step from a boat onto it. The sea around the Fastnet is relentlessly hostile, and what you're looking at here is a fairly typical day. Not even a bad one. In winter, it gets much worse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat draws me back to this photograph is the colour of the water. Where surf breaks over submerged rocks at the fringes, the white water sits just beneath the surface and turns the dark Atlantic green into this remarkable turquoise. You wouldn't expect it twelve miles off West Cork. I associate that colour with the tropics, not with a jagged rock in Irish waters. But there it is. The Atlantic does what it wants.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCape Clear Island sits on the horizon behind, the closest point of land. Often called the Teardrop of Ireland, it was the last thing emigrants saw of home when sailing for America and Australia. That thought always sits with me when I look at this image. The lighthouse has stood here since 1904, built from Cornish granite after the original cast-iron tower proved inadequate against Atlantic storms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in black and white to strip the scene back to its essentials. The rock, the tower, the sea. Overcast skies and soft, diffuse light gave the granite a remarkable tonal range, while broken waves around the base of the rock show just how exposed this place really is. The twisted trunk gives the foreground real weight and draws you across those flat stepping stones toward the castle. Kerry","description":"\u003cp\u003eIt's rare enough in Ireland to see the sun all the way down to the horizon. There's nearly always a bank of cloud sitting out there, waiting to swallow it ten minutes early. This evening on Dunmore Head, the atmosphere cooperated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI'd been working my way along the clifftop looking for a composition that made sense of the scale. The Blaskets were laid out across the horizon, Great Blasket taking up most of the view, the smaller islands scattered either side. The Atlantic was about as calm as I've ever seen it out there. Barely a ripple. And the light was already deep gold, maybe fifteen minutes from setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stopped me at this spot was a zigzag of rock and grassy headland that pulls your eye through the frame, from the dark cliff face at bottom left, up to the right, then back out toward the islands and across to where the sun was dropping. That kind of natural leading line is something you can spend hours searching for. This evening it just presented itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDunmore Head is the most westerly point of mainland Ireland. Nothing between you and Newfoundland except those islands. I've photographed the Blaskets from dozens of angles over the years, but this was one of those occasions where everything lined up. The light, the calm, the composition. Little Skellig rises from the dark water beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph on a clear, moonless night with virtually no cloud cover. The Milky Way arcs across the sky above the settlement, thousands of stars visible thanks to the remarkable atmospheric transparency you get this far out to sea. The clocháns sit in a row descending the steep slope, surrounded by white sea campion and thick grass, while behind them Little Skellig rises from a calm sea that's reflecting every shade of red and orange from the clouds above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat strikes me about this image is how the warm light catches the curved stonework of each hut. These structures have stood here for over 1,400 years, battered by Atlantic storms, and yet here they are. The long exposure has pulled detail from the cloud streaking across the star field while the sea has gone smooth around the rocks in the foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like about this composition is the depth. You have the rocky inlet and its sea stacks in the middle ground, the cliffs on the right providing a frame, and then the Skelligs twelve kilometres out, sitting right on the edge of everything. Clare","description":"\u003cp\u003eI drove three hours north from Killarney one evening because I'd just opened a gallery selling Irish landscape photography and didn't have a single image of the Cliffs of Moher. A fairly significant gap, as it turned out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBy the time I arrived, the cliffs were closed for the day. A sign at the entrance warned people to stay well back because of the wind. I read it, thought about it for roughly four seconds, and went in anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003ePerhaps not my wisest decision. This wasn't jacket-flapping wind. This was the kind that genuinely tries to rearrange your centre of gravity. Being anywhere near the edge of a 200-metre cliff face in those conditions is objectively dangerous, and I was very aware of that with every step. I kept low, moved carefully, set the tripod on solid rock well back from the edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut the conditions that made it dangerous made it dramatic. The Atlantic was furious, white surf hammering the base of the cliffs in continuous lines. A faint break in the cloud off to the west threw just enough warmth into the scene to separate sky from sea, and that heavy diffused light picked out every sedimentary layer in the rock face beautifully. The whole line of them marching away southward into the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI love the anger in this photograph. The ocean looks like it's trying to tear the cliffs down, and the cliffs look like they couldn't care less. Fourteen kilometres of sheer rock, hundreds of millions of years old, taking everything a bad October evening can throw at them. I got the image I came for, got back to the car without being blown off anything, and drove home. The Cliffs of Moher run for fourteen kilometres along the Clare coast, and the sedimentary bands in them are over 300 million years old. Namurian shale and sandstone, laid down long before anything walked on land. When that gold light hits them at the right angle, you can read the geology like a book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBranaunmore stood dark and blunt against the churning white surf below. A sea stack the Atlantic has been working on for thousands of years but hasn't managed to pull down yet. O'Brien's Tower sat tiny on the clifftop above. I'd been watching the light build for over an hour, waiting for it to go fully gold, and the wind was so strong off the cliff face that it was doing most of the work of keeping my position steady. I got the frame I wanted before my nerve gave out, which is the important thing!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThat low western light across the sedimentary layers, the ocean white at the base, Branaunmore holding firm. I could have stayed longer. I waited for the right moment and caught this break throwing selective light across the middle ground, picking out the cottage, the road, the dry stone walls. Everything else stayed muted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Valley was the last place in Ireland to receive electricity, which didn't arrive until 1976. The narrow road draws you in past old field boundaries, grass growing up the middle of it, and the scattered trees around the ruin give it scale. There's a rock in the bottom left that anchors everything, gives your eye somewhere to start before it travels across the water and up into the valley. When you get a mirror like this, the foreground does double duty. The sky is already up there doing its thing. That post-sunset window where the colour actually intensifies rather than fades. The clouds had broken just enough to let pink light flood in across the tops, and the lake held every bit of it. The reflection was almost sharper than the sky itself, the way it can be when the surface is absolutely calm and the tones deepen slightly in the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Gap is a glacial pass between the Reeks and Purple Mountain, and on a quiet November evening it feels properly old. The valley funnels everything inward. Sound, light, your attention. I stood there for twenty minutes after making this frame, not photographing, just watching the colour shift through its last stages.
