It was only when I started making deliberate trips north through the Galtees and into the Glen of Aherlow that I began to properly see it. The Golden Vale in winter light is something else entirely.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Rock of Cashel has been photographed a million times, but I keep going back. Every season, every sky gives it a different weight. The instinct from the air is always to go wide. But directly above the Rock of Cashel, the boundary wall changed my mind. From this angle it forms a lovely V shape, pulling your attention inward toward the complex, and that demanded a portrait frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe texture of the limestone outcrop is something else from above. You lose that entirely from ground level, where you're looking up at towers and Gothic windows. From here, you see how the building grows directly out of the rock. The stone of the walls and the stone of the outcrop, they're almost the same thing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLow western light was catching every crack and fold in the limestone, warming the whole face of the rock while the plains of Tipperary stretched flat in every direction around it. You can understand immediately why the high kings of Munster chose this spot. It overlooks everything for miles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI had a few seconds to compose as we banked overhead. Helicopters don't wait for you to deliberate. But that V of the wall, the warm light on that remarkable rock face. Always glancing up from the N8, always thinking I'd come back properly. This was the evening I finally did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun was low in the west, throwing warm light directly onto the stone walls and the round tower. Partly cloudy sky, which is exactly what you want. Enough cloud to catch colour, enough gaps to let the light through. The Galtee Mountains were disappearing into a band of haze along the ridge, and the whole Tipperary countryside was rolling away flat and green to the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made this photograph was the boundary wall. From ground level you barely notice it, but from above it becomes the whole composition. One long, unbroken curve tracing the contours of the limestone hill, holding the cathedral ruins, the round tower, Cormac's Chapel, the graveyard with its carved Celtic crosses, all within its sweep. The seat of the high kings of Munster before the Church took it over in the 12th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe scaffolding on Cormac's Chapel is part of a major OPW conservation project that began in 2009 to preserve Ireland's earliest surviving wall frescoes, dating from the 1100s. Practically medieval itself at this stage!
