Hook Head drew me first. It's one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world, and standing at its base in winter storm light is a remarkable experience. The Saltee Islands, too, with their gannet colonies and raw Atlantic edges, have kept me coming back over the years.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis collection gathers my favourite work from across the county, from the drama of Hook Peninsula to quieter stretches of coast that most people drive straight past!\u003c\/p\u003e","products":[{"product_id":"irl-wx-001-hook-head","title":"Hook Head, Co. Wexford","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe tower dates back over 800 years. Over 800 years, and it's still doing the same job it was built for. Just with better bulbs! That's what gets me about Hook Head. It looks like any other operational light station with its bold black and white bands and modern optics, but the structure beneath that paint is genuinely medieval.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph on an evening when cloud was building from the southwest and the sea was rough, waves breaking hard over the rocks in the foreground. The wind was constant and the light kept breaking through in patches, dancing across the water's surface in a way that's particular to this stretch of the Wexford coast. Not comfortable conditions for standing around with a tripod, but exactly the conditions that make a place like this come alive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI had the black and white conversion in mind from the start. The tonal range in that sky, the texture in the rock, white water against dark stone. It was always going to work in monochrome. I set up wide to capture the full sweep of the headland and that enormous cloudscape, then watched and waited for the moment when everything aligned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinates me is how dangerous this coastline must have been before that light existed. The rocks are brutal, the currents unforgiving. Centuries of mariners depended on that tower. Hook Lighthouse has been standing on that headland for eight hundred years, and on this particular evening it felt like every one of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI was down on the rocks below the peninsula as the last daylight drained out of the sky. Long exposure, somewhere around a minute, which meant dealing with the beacon. Every rotation threatened to blow out the frame completely. So I stood there in the dark on wet rock, hand over the lens, letting the light flash once to register properly, then covering each subsequent sweep. You're counting the rhythm, trying not to wreck sixty seconds of work with one mistimed move. It requires a bit of nerve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut the balance came out. That single flash of warm gold cuts across the blue hour water, and here's what I love most. The long exposure has smoothed the sea into something very calm, but where the beam touches the surface, it reveals the actual ripples and texture underneath. The smooth water is a kind of lie. The illuminated water tells the truth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA spur of rock runs across the middle of the frame, creating a zigzag line that pulls you from the foreground tidal pools straight out to the lighthouse. I didn't plan that.
