You drive an hour south of Dublin and suddenly you're standing in a glacial valley with a round tower rising from the trees and not a sound but wind and jackdaws. Glendalough does that to people. It certainly did it to me the first time I visited, years ago, and I've kept going back since.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Wicklow Mountains have a wildness that surprises anyone expecting a gentle garden. Frost on the boardwalks of the Spinc in January, low cloud dragging across Lough Tay, the Great Sugar Loaf catching the last copper light of a winter afternoon. This was a cold winter morning, the kind where the sun takes its time reaching the valley floor. The upper slopes on the right had just caught the first warm light while everything below remained in blue shadow. That contrast is what makes the scene work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFrom higher up the hillside you can see the full length of the lake, the small dam structure at its near end, bare trees and mossy rock in the foreground. The Wicklow Mountains can feel surprisingly remote for being so close to Dublin. This is the Wicklow one, the headland at the southern end of Brittas Bay, and it's a place I keep returning to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI'd walked the quieter southern stretch for a while that evening, looking for something to anchor the foreground, when I found this layered rock formation sitting in the shallows. Flat, textured, almost like pages of a book fanned open by the tide. Exactly what I needed. I got the tripod down low, right at the waterline, barely above the wash. The waves were gentle enough to give the water some life without flooding the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen the sky did something remarkable. Long lines of cloud radiating outward from the horizon, fanning across the entire frame. You can't plan for that. You can only be there when it happens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I love about this image is how everything connects. The rough texture of that rock against smooth wet sand. The cloud pattern pulling your eye from the foreground all the way to Mizen Head and the green slope running down to the water. In a large print, you can even pick out the offshore wind farm on the horizon, which gives it an unexpected sense of scale. I made it in Glendalough at a time when I was barely figuring out what landscape photography meant for me. Still learning how to see. Still working out the difference between pointing a camera at something nice and actually making a photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a small track off the main trail through the valley. Nothing dramatic. A footpath winding through oak and birch, tree roots breaking through the surface of the dirt, moss on everything, that particular deep green you get in Wicklow woodland when the light is soft and overcast. The kind of path that narrows as it goes, drawing you in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003ePeople who know Glendalough recognise it immediately. They don't even need to read the title. The character of those gnarled trees, the way the undergrowth crowds the path, the presence of the place comes through even in a photograph made by someone who barely knew what he was doing. I think that says more about the valley than it does about my abilities at the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEvery photographer has an image like this. The one that made them think, right, there might be something here worth pursuing. I've driven this stretch dozens of times, usually in rain, usually without stopping. But this particular August afternoon the cloud cover was doing something useful for once. Heavy, but full of interest and texture. The kind of light that lets colour speak for itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAnd the colour was extraordinary. The heather had peaked across both hillsides, a solid wash of purple running from the road edge right up to the ridgeline. Below, those few green fields on the valley floor were almost luminous against it. I pulled in where the road widens near the top of the pass and spent twenty minutes waiting for a gap in the traffic to clear the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe gorse was still holding its yellow too, which surprised me that late in the season.
