irl-c-015-bluebell-woods
Bluebell Woods, Co. Cork

Early May 2009, Courtmacsherry Woods in West Cork. I'd spent days trying to make a bluebell photograph I was actually happy with. The bluebells were at their absolute peak, that dense violet carpet across the woodland floor that only lasts a brief window each spring. I made plenty of conventional images. Sharp, well-composed, technically fine. But nothing captured what it actually feels like to stand in there, where the colour seems to hover above the ground and the whole place goes slightly unreal.

So I tried something I almost never do. Intentional camera movement. Deliberate blur. The first attempts were just mess, but gradually I got a feel for how to move so the blur complemented the forms rather than fought them. The vertical sweep follows the line of the trunks, pulling them into dark streaks, while the bluebells and green canopy dissolve into soft bands of colour.

More painting than photograph. That was the point. But if you've ever walked through a bluebell wood in early May, I think you'd recognise it immediately. That wash of blue and green, the slender trunks, bright diffused light through new leaves. It's completely unlike almost everything else I've made, and I love it for exactly that reason!
