Cuverville Island sits in the Errera Channel on the Antarctic Peninsula, and the icebergs that drift past it are extraordinary. This particular face was vast, filling the frame almost entirely. What drew me were the compression ridges running diagonally across the surface, parallel lines carved by unimaginable pressure over decades. They give the ice a texture that reads almost like geological strata.
The light was flat and overcast, which is actually ideal for this kind of subject. No harsh shadows, no blown highlights. Just the subtle shift from bright white at the top down to that pale blue in the lower section, where the ice is oldest and most dense. A thin strip of deep blue Antarctic water anchors the bottom of the frame!
Scale is difficult to convey. That low-lying ice formation along the horizon helps, but the sheer mass of this berg is hard to comprehend until you're beside it.
