A wrecked wooden boat on a gravel shore in Svalbard, its hull split open and the superstructure folded in on itself. Rust staining marks the old waterline. Everything above it is falling apart in slow motion, plank by plank, exposed to Arctic weather with no shelter and no reprieve.

Behind it, the layered sedimentary mountains of Spitsbergen rise steeply into low cloud. The rock strata are remarkably distinct, horizontal bands laid down over millions of years and then tilted and carved by ice. Sparse tundra clings to the lower slopes.

The flat overcast light suits this subject well. No drama from the sky, just quiet, even illumination that picks out every detail of the decay. The boat is disintegrating, but it's doing so on its own terms and at its own pace!

★★★★★

Saw this 7 years ago in Killarney in the gallery and should have bought it then. Bought it online this spring, and arrived quickly, with great communication! Has been framed, hung, and is being enjoyed! Even the framer said it was an AMAZING photograph!

This picture is magnificent in that it captures the essence of the Little Skellig Island. Every time I look at it over my sofa, I remember feeling grateful for traveling to Ireland and experiencing the way your photography mesmerized me.

I ordered Peter Cox's stunning photo of Small Skellig which now sits in my main foyer at home. I get as much enjoyment from looking at it every time I come home as I do explaining its origins to guests who remark and ask about it when they arrive!
