Eighty-nine steps up a granite tower twelve miles out in the Atlantic, and then you walk into this. The Fresnel lens fills the lantern room at Fastnet like something from another century, because it is. Most Irish lighthouses have been converted to solar by now, their old optics removed. But solar panels wouldn't last a month out here. The ocean would tear them apart. So the Fastnet keeps its original giant lens, every prism and ring of hand-ground glass still intact, still throwing light across twenty miles of open water.

I made this photograph from the lower catwalk. The Fastnet has a double-decker lantern, which is unusual, and from below you get this view up through the glass with the sea and sky beyond. Neilly O'Reilly, the attendant, was working through his maintenance checklist. One of a small number of people who know this lighthouse intimately. The overcast light that day was perfect for it. No harsh shadows competing with the glass. Just diffuse grey light and the lens doing something remarkable with every bit of it.

My first visit to the rock, after years of fascination. I'm glad I had the camera ready for it!

Read the story behind these photographs, from six or seven nights out on the Fastnet Rock.

★★★★★

Saw this 7 years ago in Killarney in the gallery and should have bought it then. Bought it online this spring, and arrived quickly, with great communication! Has been framed, hung, and is being enjoyed! Even the framer said it was an AMAZING photograph!

This picture is magnificent in that it captures the essence of the Little Skellig Island. Every time I look at it over my sofa, I remember feeling grateful for traveling to Ireland and experiencing the way your photography mesmerized me.

I ordered Peter Cox's stunning photo of Small Skellig which now sits in my main foyer at home. I get as much enjoyment from looking at it every time I come home as I do explaining its origins to guests who remark and ask about it when they arrive!
