The morning before this, I watched a rotor tear itself loose mid-flight and nearly lost a heavy lift drone into the Atlantic. One motor ripped clean off its mount. The thing lurched and staggered over open ocean for what felt like a very long time before I managed to nurse it back to solid ground. Shoot over.
So I drove from Clare to County Louth, got the drone repaired that same day, turned around and drove the whole way back. Seven hours on the road to be standing in the exact same spot by evening. Sometimes that's what it takes.
The following morning, the sky caught fire. Intense red and orange light flooding through broken altocumulus, the kind of sunrise you might see once or twice a year. Waves hammering the base of the cliffs, the lighthouse compound sitting white against all that colour and fury. This photograph became the cover image for my Atlantic Light book, and I think you can see why!
There's an "Eire" sign near the tip of the peninsula, painted during the Second World War to help American pilots navigating the Atlantic. A small detail, but I love that it's visible in the frame. Loop Head is the full stop at the end of that extraordinary sentence of cliffs that begins with the Cliffs of Moher further north. The Shannon Estuary on one side, open Atlantic on the other. Sometimes the worst days set up the best ones.
