Most visitors to Skellig Michael never see the South Peak. They climb the main stairway to the monastery, take in the beehive huts, and that's extraordinary enough. But the hermitage sits higher again, on a narrow spine of rock with drops on both sides that I'd rather not think about too carefully.

What gets me about this photograph is how hard the hermitage is to spot at first. The monks built their small oratory and levelled their terrace so precisely into the natural rock that your eye slides right past it. You have to look again before you realise what you're seeing. These were people who understood stone the way a carpenter understands grain.

The light was soft and flat that evening, heavy cloud sitting low with just a residual glow along the horizon. No direct sun. The drama was all in the rock and the geometry of what those monks built. Below, the monastery on the North Peak. Beyond it, Little Skellig white with gannets, and the faint outline of the Kerry mountains on the horizon.

The hermit who lived on this terrace would have looked down at a community of maybe a dozen monks on an island eight miles into the Atlantic, and considered that too much company! That puts a certain perspective on things.

Saw this 7 years ago in Killarney in the gallery and should have bought it then. Bought it online this spring, and arrived quickly, with great communication! Has been framed, hung, and is being enjoyed! Even the framer said it was an AMAZING photograph!

This picture is magnificent in that it captures the essence of the Little Skellig Island. Every time I look at it over my sofa, I remember feeling grateful for traveling to Ireland and experiencing the way your photography mesmerized me.

I ordered Peter Cox's stunning photo of Small Skellig which now sits in my main foyer at home. I get as much enjoyment from looking at it every time I come home as I do explaining its origins to guests who remark and ask about it when they arrive!
