I was picking my way back down from the South Peak of Skellig Michael, careful on the descent, when I stopped and looked toward the lighthouse below. I'd been out there many times before but never seen this particular view. Not from this angle.
The cliffs fell away steeply beneath me, all those layered textures of rock and grass forming wonderful converging lines that pulled the eye down toward the lighthouse building at the water's edge. And there, just above it, a slender crescent moon had appeared in the darkening sky. The Atlantic was a deep teal, remarkably calm for Skellig, with white surf breaking gently around the jagged rocks at the base of the headland. That residual warmth from the sunset was still catching the water on the right side of the frame, giving everything a golden edge against the cooler blues elsewhere.
What drew me to this photograph was the combination of elements I'd never had together before. The geometry of the landscape from above. The lighthouse, small and solitary on its rocky perch. That crescent moon perfectly placed. Colours shifting from warm gold to deep ocean blue. I've photographed this place in all sorts of conditions over the years, and it keeps revealing new things. Fourteen hundred years of history beneath your feet and that kind of light fading around you. It's not hard to understand why people have been drawn here for so long!
