This iceberg was drifting in open water off Svalbard, a massive tabular block of glacial ice sitting heavy and low against a dark sea. The flat overcast light that day stripped out all distraction, leaving just the raw colour of the ice itself. That blue is remarkable. Deep, saturated, concentrated by centuries of compression before the glacier calved it into the Arctic Ocean.

What drew me to this particular berg was the erosion along its waterline. Wave action had carved channels and undercuts into the base, while cracks ran through the upper surfaces where it will eventually break apart. The whole structure looks both solid and temporary. Smaller fragments were visible on the horizon, remnants of the same process playing out across miles of cold water.

The heavy grey sky gives the image its mood. Everything funnels your attention down to that single block of vivid ice against the dark ocean!

★★★★★

Saw this 7 years ago in Killarney in the gallery and should have bought it then. Bought it online this spring, and arrived quickly, with great communication! Has been framed, hung, and is being enjoyed! Even the framer said it was an AMAZING photograph!

This picture is magnificent in that it captures the essence of the Little Skellig Island. Every time I look at it over my sofa, I remember feeling grateful for traveling to Ireland and experiencing the way your photography mesmerized me.

I ordered Peter Cox's stunning photo of Small Skellig which now sits in my main foyer at home. I get as much enjoyment from looking at it every time I come home as I do explaining its origins to guests who remark and ask about it when they arrive!
