Fastnet Rock, about four miles southwest of Cape Clear. Ireland's most southerly point and the last piece of home that generations of emigrants saw as they sailed west. The lighthouse has stood here since 1904, built from Cornish granite after the original cast-iron tower proved inadequate against Atlantic storms.
I made this photograph in black and white to strip the scene back to its essentials. The rock, the tower, the sea. Overcast skies and soft, diffuse light gave the granite a remarkable tonal range, while broken waves around the base of the rock show just how exposed this place really is. The lighthouse rises from the jagged outcrop like it grew there, which in a way it did, block by block, over eight years of brutal construction.
Fastnet is a favourite subject of mine, and one I keep returning to!
Read the story behind these photographs, from six or seven nights out on the Fastnet Rock.
