The helipad on An Tiaracht is regarded as the most dangerous civilian helipad in Europe. We weren't landing on it that day. The wind was ferocious, blowing straight up the steep slope, and the pilot made the right call. I wasn't arguing.
I was on a maintenance flight with the Commissioners of Irish Lights when I made this photograph. The plan had been to put down on that tiny platform just visible to the right of the lighthouse buildings. Instead, we circled. And circled again. From the mainland near the Blaskets, all you see of An Tiaracht is a dark pyramid shape on the horizon. The lighthouse is completely hidden on the western side of the rock. You'd never know it was there. That mystery is part of what drew me to this place.
Two jagged peaks of dark rock joined by a narrow saddle, the lighthouse built in 1870 sitting at 275 feet, white water exploding against black cliffs on every side. The light was flat and grey, no golden hour drama, just raw Atlantic storm. Sometimes that diffused light lets the textures speak for themselves. Every walkway, every solar panel, the buildings clinging to that ridge look almost defiant against the ocean.
One of the most dramatic Co. Kerry landscapes I've ever photographed, and one of the least known. Not being able to land was the best thing that happened to me that day!
