The first time I tried to reach An Tiaracht, in December 2009, the helicopter couldn't land. Wind hammering from the west, no safe way to put down on that narrow strip of rock. We turned back. I spent the flight home staring at the Atlantic, already planning the next attempt.
When I did finally make it out there, conditions were kinder. Overcast but calm, with reasonable visibility for a change. An Tiaracht is the most westerly point of Ireland and, by extension, Europe. The name itself means "the westerly." It's a place that has fascinated me for years. Twin peaks, steep cliffs, the Atlantic battering it from every direction. It looks remarkably like Skellig Michael, but with something the Skellig doesn't have: a natural arch running right through the middle connecting the two summits.
I made this photograph as we lifted off and circled on departure. From the air you can read the whole structure clearly. The lighthouse on the lower western peak, its lantern 84 metres above high water. The inclined railway running down to the derrick landing below, a funicular that hauled supplies to the keepers and their families. Until automation in 1988, it was the westernmost railway in Europe. I love that detail.
One of the most inhospitable places I've ever stood on. I'm very glad I went back!
