Most people want the sunlit version of this place. I understand that. But Skellig Michael in flat grey light is a different animal entirely. Every crack in the old red sandstone becomes visible. Every ledge, every fold, every surface the Atlantic has been working on for millions of years. Bright sunshine flattens all of that out.
From high above the island, the full architecture reveals itself. The South Peak with its hermitage, that impossibly steep pinnacle where monks once climbed to pray in terrifying isolation. Both lighthouses visible below it. The abandoned northern light sitting on its ridge, the operational southern one with white painted walls catching whatever light remains. Two lighthouses, six hundred years of human stubbornness on a rock that clearly doesn't want anyone there.
Little Skellig sits behind in the murk, a pale shape, home to thirty thousand gannets and absolutely nothing else. The brooding clouds press down and the rock responds by showing you everything it has.
I have a version of this scene in blazing light. More conventionally dramatic. But I keep coming back to this one. It captures what the place actually feels like when you're out there, twelve kilometres from the mainland, surrounded by grey water and grey sky. That flat evening light was exactly what the photograph needed!
