The old helipad on Fastnet Rock, roughly eleven miles off the coast of Cape Clear. I made this photograph on a still summer night, the kind where the Atlantic flattens out just enough to let you work with exposures of several minutes. The waves pulling across the rocks below have gone soft and milky, while the lights of Schull and the Mizen Peninsula glow warm along the horizon.
Above, the sky is full of stars. There's a faint trace of the Milky Way visible despite that light on the horizon. The helipad itself is such a strange thing to find out here, this flat concrete surface perched on one of the most exposed rocks in Ireland. It gives the whole composition a sense of scale that the sea alone wouldn't provide!
Fastnet is not an easy place to get to, and it's even harder to stay on long enough to wait for conditions like this. The calm and the clarity came together on the same night, which doesn't always happen.
Read the story behind these photographs, from six or seven nights out on the Fastnet Rock.
