The road out to Black Ball Head from Allihies makes you question your sat nav, your life choices, and eventually your suspension. It narrows and twists until you're fairly certain you've missed a turn. Then the hedgerows fall away and there's nothing but open Atlantic and a Napoleonic signal tower standing on the edge of a cliff.
Built in the early 1800s when a French invasion seemed genuinely imminent, the tower is part of a chain that dots the entire Irish coastline. This one is remarkably well preserved, perched on the tip of the headland with sheer drops on three sides. The men who manned it, scanning the horizon for French sails, must have cursed whoever assigned them here.
I'd wanted to photograph it from above for a long time, and this afternoon the conditions finally came together. Broken cloud letting warm, low light onto the headland while the rest of the coast sat in shadow. High tide, heavy swell, white water hammering the cliffs. From that height the whole peninsula reveals itself. Neat green fields running in orderly strips right to the cliff edge, then rock, spray, chaos. The tower sits exactly on that boundary between the farmed and the wild, looking impossibly small against the Atlantic beyond it. How did anyone spend a winter out there!
Read the story behind these photographs, a walk out along the Beara Peninsula.
